Playing Bagpipes Are Good For Your Health

Filed under: Bagpipe Music — caber @ 7:51 AM

This article from the BBC is a few years old, but I think it’s quite entertaining. Its title is “Bagpipes pose no health risks”. Who would have thought playing the pipes could be anything but a healthy experience? Thanks to the BBC, piping has been declared a safe activity.

From the article:

Fears for the health of bagpipe players have been dismissed as “a load of bunk” by the principal of the College of Piping.

Robert Wallace said the dangers of playing the pipes were no greater than those faced by other musicians.

Those zany Brits love to write stories to sell newspapers!

Bagpipes and the creation of new innovative highland bagpipe music influenced by the Celtic / Scottish bagpipe tradtion is the specialty of Scott Cawthon, one of five Cawthon bagpipe artisans.

Donald and Jock MacLellan, Scottish immigrants and family friends first introduced him and his four brothers to playing the bagpipe during the 1960’s. He began taking bagpipe lessons from Donald MacLellan at the ripe old age of 8. H also had tutoring from local bagpipe instructors Nelson Frew and John Goodenow.
